Business Practices

A free sample edit is offered to all potential clients. Anyone interested in my services may submit up to five pages (see Manuscript Format) of their manuscript for proofreading or copyediting. Authors should specify in a cover letter what the piece is about; whether or not they are interested in having it proofread, copyedited, or desire any additional services; and the page and word count of the entire piece.

The purpose of the free sample edit is twofold: To allow the writer/author a chance to familiarize themselves with my editing style, and to allow me to familiarize myself with their writing style. It is very important that an author work with someone they feel comfortable with, and in whose judgment they trust. At the same time, is it important for an editor to gain a sense of the authors' writing style and be upfront and honest if they are not the right person for the job.

Included in the return of the sample edit, an estimate will be provided for the entire cost of services. These estimates are generally accurate if the rest of the piece resembles the first five pages. Therefore, the writer/author should not clean up or polish the first five pages for their sample edit, unless they intend to do the same to the rest of the piece before submitting.

Should the author decide to employ my services:

  • The initial estimate should be signed and returned with payment in full (see Payment Guidelines), along with a printed or typed copy of the entire manuscript (see Manuscript Format). Should the author choose to have editorial changes made directly to their manuscript (see Services & Fees), a copy of the manuscript on floppy disk, zip disc, or CD-Rom should also be provided, in an MS Word or compatible format.
  • All work will be performed in a timely manner. Work shall be completed and returned to clients within two weeks to thirty days of receipt of manuscript, depending on the length and condition of the manuscript, and the terms of service to be provided. (Proofreading generally takes less time than copyediting the same manuscript would.)
  • All work will be performed in an objective and professional manner. The purpose of any editor is to help a writer identify strengths and weaknesses, and organize and develop their own personal writing style. The authors' original style, voice, and tone shall be respected, as well as the intentions/methods of conveying the message of the piece and its' presentation.
  • A receipt made out to the author will be provided after receipt of payment in full, for all work performed.
